Uses:
Remove the nuts from the shells, they can be eaten raw or roasted. You can crush them and eat them with your cereal, salad or use in a pesto. You can also soak them in water to make milk.
When and where to find it:
Best picked in late August to October. You can find them in scrubland, hedges and woods, especially with moist fertile soil. They are common in lowland oak woods.
Other Observations:
A deciduous shrub or tree that can grow up to 6m, often coppiced to encourage growth. It has smooth bark. The nut is found inside a leafy husk.
