Uses:

Crab apples are small, hard and sour raw, but taste great when cooked in sauces, jellies, chutneys and fruit leathers. They work well with other Autumn fruits.

When and where to find it: 

The apples usually grow between September and October. They can be found in woods, copses, scrub and hedgerows.

Other Observations: 

A small deciduous tree grows up to 10m. Often spiny, with grey bark and a dense crown. The fruit are small green apples, turning redder in Autumn.
