Uses:

The small nuts are edible raw without the husk. You can eat the young leaves straight from the tree or in a salad.

When and where to find it: 

Leaves best harvested in April and May. The nuts can be found in September and October. It grows in woodlands, often in pure stands, on well-drained sandy or chalk soils. It’s widely planted around the UK.

Other Observations: 

A deciduous tree that likes to spread, it can grow up to 40m. It has smooth, grey bark. The fruit is a three angled brown nut.
